Chernobyl Curs- Round 1 Epilogue Round 1 Epilogue:

He had to stop and purge what little he had in his stomach before continuing his track for the Ferris wheel. He felt a little better, and he believed that he could go on without too much trouble. But first, he had to rest.

Iza had returned to almost the exact spot where he had left her earlier that morning. From what Beyra said, he'd expected to find her fidgeting and on edge. Instead, she sat quietly with an air of abject depression, her head drooping, and listlessly drawing her paw in the dirt.

"Ee-*," he croaked, then he tried again, "Ee-sah."

She leaped to her feet, her face lit up with relief and joy. Her tail was a

The autumn sun was higher than ever, and Marcus knew that he was running late. But he was there at last, shuffling his way towards the wheel, still gripping the meat in his teeth.  

He was in the final stretch, he was going to win; but he was tired, his mouth hurt, and he felt like crap. All he wanted was to deliver the food, find Iza, and take a long nap.

Sorry, Iza. You told me to pace myself, and I sure as fuck didn't. You can nag all you like from now on… I'll listen.

He was dimly aware of other dogs nearby, delivering their prizes to Beyra's dogs. More than one was still attempting to outrun or fight off their

Marcus was almost done in. The pursuit had taken its toll; his head was beginning to spin again, and his stomach was lurching crazily. But he shoved everything aside as he channeled every last ounce of his strength for one more task. As he had done with the crazed dog he'd fought the previous day, he swung and drove the stick home with all his weight behind it.

The stick snapped under the force of impact. In the same instant he felt a sharp pain in his mouth; an earsplitting shriek of pain lanced through his already throbbing head.

Numbly, Marcus watched him go. He slowly got to his feet, and swayed in his stance. Gotta chase that bastard down and get my catch back…He coughed and retched. Ugh, except I think this is gonna get worse before its better.

And even if he caught up with him, what then? Get bit some more, with that toxic saliva mixed in?

I'm no coward, but I guess I'm not stupid either…

He made his way back into the trees, to the spot he had first caught scent of the carrion. He had a half-formed notion of going back to the carcass, and then shook his head.

Except I'd have to have his damn scent on it again.

Marcus shifted nervously. As if I could answer that even if I wanted to. Fortunately Borf answered his own question:

"That doesn't surprise me at all. She would think of some sick game like this."

The white dog sat down heavily. He moodily scratched the ground in silence for a few moments before he continued:

"I wanted no part of this shit to begin with," he grumbled, "I'm here 'cause I didn't want an old friend of mine to get drafted instead. That damn bitch didn't care who she got, just as long as there were enough slobs to fight in her little tournament. Now she's playing games with us.
